Step 1: Decide on Your Logistics
Before you start building your email list, decide what you will be sending and the purpose behind sending people emails.
Are you trying to send your existing clients newsletters? Or, are you trying to prospect and want to send valuable content to get new customers?
Decide on your goal and your audience before getting started.
You also want to decide on how you will be sending your contacts emails.
There are many different platforms you can use to send emails to your customers. I’m not talking about Yahoo!, Outlook, or Gmail. I’m talking about an email marketing platform that allows you to send out an email to dozens of people, but making it feel like a personal email.
A service that we recommend is Mailchimp, because it is free for up to 2,000 subscribers. This makes it easy for you to get started with your email marketing at no cost.
You may find another platform you feel is best for you, which is great! Just find one that you understand and is easy to use.
Step 2: Get People on the Email List
The next step is knowing how to get people on your email list. It may seem like an easy process, but the truth is, you can’t put a form on your website and assume people will sign up to get your content.
This unfortunately isn’t how it works.
You have to give people a reason to want to sign up for it, or else they won’t.
Something that is very helpful is the creation of lead magnets, which are pieces of content people will download in exchange for their email address.
Another option is to use subscribe bars in your blog posts, but make sure it says something enticing.
Let them know the benefits of joining the list, so they won’t want to miss out on the value your emails offer.
Step 3: Decide on Your Type of Emails
Next, you will want to decide on the types of emails you send to your list.
Something that I recommend to most of my clients are automated email sequences.
Automated email sequences are a list of emails that each person who signs up will receive. This allows you to create a list of emails, decide when they will be sent to your new subscribers, and they will all be sent out to them on time.
You don’t have to worry about getting these new subscribers content quickly to keep them on your list.
This is perfect for sending them a welcome email, then a few days later sending them information about your services, and then a week later sending them an offer.
What to Say in Your Welcome Email
Your welcome email will depend on how the person signed up for your list.
If they signed up to receive a guide, you will want to send it over and thank them for signing up to download it.
You want to change up the welcome email depending on the lead.
With that being said, you will also want to keep track of who is coming from what lead so you know what welcome email to send to who.
Why You Need to Send Different Welcome Emails
Email marketing platforms are so awesome because they allow you to categorize groups of people based on your lead magnets.
To explain why this is great, here is an example:
Say you own a gym and there are older people and young people. You have two guides, one for staying healthy in old age, and one is about getting in the best shape of your life. When they sign up, you don’t want to send them the same guide on accident or send them both guides.
You want to send them what they asked for to further entice them and to make your efforts even more effective.
Step 4: Get Everything Set Up
Now that you have your emails set up and know who will be receiving what, you need to set up the front end of things.
As mentioned earlier, we recommend using lead magnets to get people to sign up for your list.
In this case, you will need to have a lead magnet on a quality landing page, and make sure your landing page is connected to a form. This form will be how you get the information from the person signing up.
Then your form needs to be connected to your email marketing platform.
You need to have everything set up perfectly with no broken links or flaws in the system. This can make you lose your valuable email contacts and can make you lose credibility.
Step 5: Promote Your Email List
The last step is to promote the benefits of getting on your email list.
You can do this through blog posts, social media, your website, and anywhere your clients will want to sign up for it.
If you have a physical location, you can even promote it to get your clients to sign up for it there.
Using a tablet or a computer in your store and advertising that you will send them deals and updates when they sign up is a great way to get more people on your list.
Whatever you can do to get people to notice your email list and want to join, you should try it.
